Floods in Orléans: the metropolis strengthens its protection

After the heavy rains of May 2016 that affected the Orléans conurbation, flood protection remains a central issue for residents. That event saw the equivalent of two to three months of rain fall in a few hours, saturating the soil and causing widespread overflowing. The incident was particularly striking with the evacuation of hundreds of motorists stranded on the A10.

Faced with these challenges, Orléans Métropole has strengthened its coordination and alert capabilities. An operational crisis room allows better management of information and decisions across the 22 municipalities. A metropolitan weather subscription ensures real-time data dissemination, crucial for rapid intervention in the conurbation.

Level sensors have been installed on waterways such as the canal, the Dhuys, the Morchêne, the Bionne, and the Égoutier. These devices make it possible to monitor water level changes and adjust emergency measures. In addition, the Observatoire des risques web page gives residents the opportunity to learn about specific risks at their address, including rainfall or the level of the Loire.

Town planning now incorporates the lessons learned from the floods. Runoff studies have led to recommendations included in the Metropolitan Local Urban Plan (PLUM). The goal is to prevent new constructions from worsening runoff. Furthermore, wetlands have been created near the Bionne and work has been carried out on structures such as the one on the Morchêne in Saint-Cyr-en-Val, in order to reduce the vulnerability of identified areas.

To raise awareness among the population, two events are planned in June in Orléans. The "Fresque de la crue", a free workshop, will be held at MOBE on June 6 to prepare for a major flood. A public meeting on "Loire Floods in Orléans: understanding, preventing and taking action" is also scheduled for June 12 at the Salle de la Cigogne, in the Saint-Marceau district. The metropolis also highlights its TéléAlerte system to inform citizens in the event of a major incident.
